Community Celebration

I chose to take a group of photos at my parish church, St. Lucy's Catholic Church on Gifford St. on the Near West Side of Syracuse. Those that attend -whether visitors or established members - use the Sunday service to build and sustain community in a number of ways. I tried to capture some of that in these photos from a regular service.

This 11 AM service usually has 40 to 60 people on any given Sunday.

St. Lucy's Invitation - All are welcome.

Beginning of mass.

Parishioner hands Fr. Jim Mathews a cell phone at the beginning of mass to talk to a parishioner who couldn't attend that day.

There's always song.

Kip, the lay person offering the reflection, gets the congregation's attention with a surprise "call from God" that includes some guidance about the gospel reading and his reflection that follows.

Blessing of the bread by all.

Joined in prayer - Our Father.

Communion

Time for reflection

After mass, always conversations
